Man down

And the first casualty of the Republican Party's dismal performance in the US elections appears to be Donald Rumsfeld.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke.

Now, will someone please charge him with war crimes and ship him to The Hague to make my joy complete?

This sudden move seems to imply that George Junior reckons it is Iraq that has seen the House and probably the Senate too fall to the Democrats.

Which just shows he really is as thick as people say, since it's clearly the falling house prices, spiralling budget deficit and rising unemployment. In other words, it's still the economy, stupid.

Might be worth having a look at the Business Week cover story this week - or better yet listen to the podcast. I think there's unease not about the economy per se - there's honest disagreement about whether or not the US economy is benefiting anyone other than shareholders.
But there is a real sense that no one is in charge. The budget deficit just seems to show that leaving anybody in charge of the American till is like leaving a contestant from America's Next Top Model in a room with six keys of cocaine and six cartons of Marlboro Lights.
BW makes the argument, and I think it's an interesting one, that Washington has less influence over the economy than ever.

Sense as ever, Rich. I think you might be onto something in relation to no one being in charge. It´s felt that way for a while now.
